I am a Tenure-track Assistant Professor at the University of Cagliari, Italy. I obtained my PhD degree at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (VD), Switzerland.
My research focuses on fluid flows governed by complex boundaries and interfaces. In these systems, free surfaces, geometry, microstructure, permeability, and solid deformation can fundamentally alter transport and trigger nonlinear behaviours, instabilities, and bifurcations. These effects can also be harnessed as mechanisms for flow control. I combine mathematical modelling, numerical simulations, and experiments, mostly at small scales, to uncover the physical mechanisms and key parameters governing these phenomena. My goal is to derive reduced, predictive laws that capture the essence of these complex flows and can be transferred across biological, engineering, and environmental contexts.
Permeable and microstructured interfaces: Homogenization, transport around and through microstructured bodies, interactions with surrouding aerodynamic flows, passive flow control.
Free-surface and thin-film flows: rivulets, drops, bubbles, coating problems flows over complex geometries.
Soft hydraulics: fluid-elastic instabilities, deformable boundaries, snap-through, buckling, passive flow control.
Application areas: Biological and biomedical flows, environmental fluid mechanics.
I have been awarded a mobility grant from the University of Cagliari. This support will allow me to spend two weeks at LadHyx, École Polytechnique, in Palaiseau, France, to work with Prof. Camille Duprat on problems involving fluid-structure interactions and capillary flows.
Honoured to spend two weeks as invited guest at Institut Jean Le Rond d'Alembert - Sorbonne Université. I will discuss exciting new topics with F. Picella !
The doctoral course on Computational Fluid Mechanics held at the University of Cagliari has been successfully attended by 15 PhD students. Happy to share my knowledge and see the interest in these topics.
Extremely pleased to see our Physical Review Letters paper on soft hydraulics in collaboration with Matteo Pezzulla, selected as Editors' suggestion and cover, featured in Physics Magazine.
I will present our recent work on soft hydraulics at Fluids and Complexity IV, Nice (FR).
